Diosmin's usage in
hemorrhoids treatment
Diosmin is a naturally occurring flavonoid glycoside
that can be isolated from various plant sources or derived from
the flavonoid hesperidin. Hesperidin
is found in citrus rinds and in some plants. Diosmin is
available under many brand names through the
world.
The first
commercial launch of Diosmin was in 1971 in France under
the brand name Daflon, containing micronized (finely
ground) combination of diosmin (90%) and hesperidin
(10%).
At this point
began the most studied citrus bioflavonoid treatment
which inspired with hope many hemorrhoids
sufferers.
Diosmin is
considered to be a vascular-protecting agent used to
treat chronic venous insufficiency, hemorrhoids,
lymphedema, and varicose veins.
Diosmin also
exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimutagenic
properties.
Double-blind
trials suggest that a micronized combination preparation of
diosmin and hesperidin may be helpful for
hemorrhoids.
A hundred
patients suffering an acute hemorrhoid attack received diosmin
(90%) and hesperidin (10%) in a loading dose of three 500 mg
tablets twice daily for the first four days and two tablets
twice daily the following three days.
The clinical
severity of anal discomfort, pain, and anal discharge
diminished to a greater extent in the treatment group in
comparison with placebo group.
A study of pregnant women
suffering from acute hemorrhoids who were treated with Daflon/
diosmin (90%) and hesperidin (10%)/ showed that the treatment
did not affect pregnancy, fetal development, birth weight,
infant growth, or feeding.
At the same
time half of the women reported relief from symptoms by the
fourth day of treatment.
Daflon is however not readily
available in the United States but its ingredients/ diosmin,
hesperidin/ can be found in many dietary
supplements.
Most of these supplemenets
contain quantity of diosmin and hesperedine which is enough for
treating hemorrhoids.
The
standard dose of diosmin is 500 mg twice daily. For acute
dosing, a loading dose of 1,000 mg three times daily for four
days is recommended, followed by 1,000 mg twice daily for three
days, and a maintenance dose of 500 mg twice daily for two
months.
